Mumbai: The Bombay High Court Wednesday sought within a day a report from Mumbai police on the law and order aspects of some of the public engagements of Canada-based Pakistani Islamic preacher and Sufi scholar Tahir-ul Qadri, an official said.

A division bench of Justice M.V. Kanade and Justice P.D. Kode gave the order in a petition filed by Raza Academy's chief Saeed Noori.

"Qadri is known for his inflammatory speeches and his public utterances could threaten peace in Mumbai," Noori told IANS.

The judges asked Public Prosecutor Pandurang Pol to submit a report by Thursday on the issue and find out whether police took into account the law and order situation during Qadri's public engagements in the city, the official said.

Qadri is scheduled to speak at a public meeting in south Mumbai's Marine Lines Thursday and at Sion, east Mumbai, Saturday.

Noori contended in the petition that Qadri is known for speaking on controversial issues which could impact the law and order situation in Mumbai.

"In the past, he had opined that people of Kashmir must decide whether they want to be part of India or Pakistan, and on another occasion heaped praises on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi," Noori said.

He said that the Raza Academy had written to union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil to carry out a background check on Qadri before taking further measures.
