Islamic leader's visit: HC asks police about security measures

Mumbai, Mar 14 (PTI) Observing that the metropolis can not "witness" another communal strife, the Bombay High Court has asked the police to inform tomorrow whether adequate security measures will be taken up during the visit of Islamic professor Tahir-Ul-Qadri. "We do not want a repeat of law and order problems. We have witnessed it before. In case tempers run high adequate security should be there," the court said. A division bench of Justices V M Kanade and P D Kode was hearing a petition filed by the Raza Academy, a social and religious forum of Muslims, seeking direction to the police to prohibit Qadri from entering Mumbai. According to the petitioner, Qadri, a self-proclaimed Islamic leader, may give speech against India. Qadri is scheduled to hold gatherings on March 15 in South Mumbai and on March 17 in Central Mumbai. "We apprehend that Qadri is going to give speech on how India should solve the Kashmir issue. Earlier in 2010, Qadri had in a speech in Pakistan said that Kashmir was an integral part of Pakistan," petitioner's counsel Vijay Tulpule told the court. Public prosecutor Pandurang Pol informed the court that the police have not yet taken a decision on the application filed by the organisation conducting the gathering seeking permission. A decision on whether or not to grant permission would be taken today, Pol said. "The petitioners themselves are from Muslim community. Considering the fact that the fear is coming from the same community the matter needs to be looked into," the court said. The matter will be heard tomorrow.\
