Qadri submits petition in SC for recreation of election commission

ISLAMABAD: Tehrik-e-Minhajul Quran (TMQ) Chief and Leader of Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT), Dr Tahirul Qadri Thursday submitted a petition in the Supreme Court of Pakistan for the recreation of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the light of the Constitution.

Talking to media persons after moving the application, Tahirul Qadri said that the creation of the ECP was unconstitutional since it was not erected with regard to the provision in the Constitution.

He said that ECP comprised of five members namely the chief election commissioner, and the four provincial election commissioners. Qadri said that the modus operandi for the selection of chief election commissioner and the provincial commissioners was provided in Article 213, and 218 of the Constitution of Pakistan. The TMQ chief said that according to the Constitution, three nominees for each office were suggested to the parliamentary committee that was in turn tasked with cross questioning and scrutinizing the candidates and subsequently forwarding the finalized names to the President of Pakistan for approval. However, Qadri alleged that the parliamentary committee and the politicians connived and put up their desired candidates which were consequently sanctioned by the President.

Replying to a question, Qadri said that political undertakings by him should not be attributed to the registered nongovernmental organization, Tehrik-e-Minhajul Quran. He said that Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) was a registered political party and decisions with regard to political maneuvers were taken from PAT platform.

Qadri said that he had initiated a correction movement from December 23, 2012 till the long march, whereas today he had appeared in person before the court to submit the petition for the reconstruction of the ECP.

The TMQ chief maintained that reports suggesting leniency toward President Asif Ali Zardari were unfounded and propaganda by panicked people.
