The Divine Response to Karbala and the Fate of the Oppressors
The killers of Imam Husayn perished, their names perished, and their remembrance perished, but the martyrs of Karbala survive until the Day of Judgment. Shaykh Hammad Mustafa al-Madani al-Qadri
Those who have been martyred for the sake of Allah and for the Deen of Islam are in fact not dead but they are given eternal life. Shaykh Hammad Mustafa al-Madani al-Qadri
Introduction:
The tragedy of Karbala was not merely a historical conflict but a cosmic event that shook the foundations of the universe. While the massacre of Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) and his family was a moment of supreme injustice, the aftermath revealed a series of divine interventions. These signs served as a terrifying punishment for the perpetrators and an eternal testimony to the sanctity of the martyrs. Through miraculous events in nature and the disgraceful end of the killers, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) demonstrated that while the righteous may suffer temporarily, the ultimate victory and eternal life belong to them.
The Disgraceful End of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad:
In 66 AH, divine justice began to take a physical form when Ibrahim ibn al-Ashtar, under the command of Mukhtar al-Thaqafi, tracked down the killers of Sayyiduna Imam Husayn. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad was apprehended and killed.
Narrated 'Umarah bin 'Umair:
When the heads of 'Ubaidullah bin Ziyad and his companions were brought, they were stacked in the Masjid in the courtyard. So I came to them and they were saying: It has come, it has come. And behold, there was a snake going between the heads, until it entered the nostrils of 'Ubaidullah bin Ziyad, and it remained there momentarily, then left and went until it had disappeared. Then they said: It has come, it has come. So it did that two or three times.

Nature in Mourning: Blood from Stones and Skies:
The sources narrate that the entire creation wept for Sayyiduna Imam Hussain (عليه السلام). In Jerusalem and Damascus, whenever a stone was lifted, fresh blood was found underneath instead of soil. Imam Zuhri described that:
لَمَّا قُتِلَ الْحُسَيْنُ بن عَلِيٍّ رَضِي اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ لَمْ يُرْفَعْ حَجَرٌ بِبَيْتِ الْمَقْدِسِ إِلا وُجِدَ تَحْتَهُ دَمٌ عَبِيطٌ.
“When Imam Husayn ibn Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, whenever a stone was lifted in Jerusalem (Bayt al-Maqdis), fresh blood was found beneath it.” (Al-tabarani, al-mu’jam al-kabir, Vol:3, P: 113, Hadith: 2834)
Historical accounts from witnesses describe the sky turning a deep, ominous red, appearing as if it were covered in blood clots. This celestial grief was further manifested by a solar eclipse that plunged the world into darkness for days, depriving the oppressors of the blessing of sunlight.
Miracles in Sustenance and Weather:
Divine retribution even affected the physical world of the oppressors. Imam Tabarani narrates that:
لَمَّا قُتِلَ الْحُسَيْنُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ انُتُهِبَ جَزُورٌ مِنْ عَسْكَرِهِ، فَلَمَّا طُبِخَتْ إِذَا هِيَ دَمٌ فَأَكْفَؤُوهَا.
“After the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the camels from his camp was taken as spoils of war. When its meat was cooked, it was found to have turned into blood, whereupon it was discarded and not consumed” (Al-tabarani, al-mu’jam al-kabir, Vol:3, P: 121, Hadith: 2864)
Furthermore, after the tragedy, the rain that fell was not ordinary water; it appeared as blood, staining the clothes and houses of the people as a permanent mark of divine sadness and punishment.
The Erasure of the Oppressors' Lineage:
While the killers sought to extinguish the light of the Holy Prophet’s (ﷺ) family, it was their own names that were erased. As a divine punishment, Yazid’s progeny and lineage were eventually cut off, and the Umayyad rule perished into infamy. In contrast, the name, honor, and progeny of Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) have flourished and survived across centuries, inspiring millions with their story of integrity and sacrifice.
The Eternal Voice of Truth:
Perhaps the most profound miracle was the blessed head of Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) speaking while raised on a spear in the streets of Damascus. When a bystander recited verses from Surah al-Kahf, the Imam’s head spoke, asserting that his martyrdom was even more wondrous than the story of the Companions of the Cave. This event confirmed the Quranic promise that those martyred in the way of Allah are not dead but are granted an eternal life that transcends the physical world.
Conclusion:
The events following Karbala prove that the lifespan of oppression is short, whereas the Truth never faces decline. Allah (SWT) caused every element of the universe to bear witness to the profound suffering of Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) and transformed his killers into a warning for both this world and the hereafter. Today, while every trace of Yazid and his followers has been obliterated. The remembrance, message, and supreme sacrifice of Sayyiduna Imam Husayn (عليه السلام) remain eternal and immortal until the end of time.
