Overcoming Revenge with Humanity: The Holy Prophet's ﷺ First Words in Madina
No matter what has been done to you, never allow your hearts to be hardened or become like a brick. Shaykh Hammad Mustafa al-Madani al-Qadri
Introduction:
After enduring thirteen long years of persecution, torture, psychological stress, and physical oppression in Mecca, the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated to Madina. While any ordinary human under such immense pressure might have felt frustration, agitation, or a deep desire for vengeance, the Holy Prophet's ﷺ arrival marked a revolutionary moment in human history. Instead of laying out a strategy for retaliation or naming his oppressors, his very first words laid the groundwork for a society rooted in peace, compassion, and universal humanity.
Choosing Compassion Over Retaliation:
When escaping years of severe violence, economic boycotts, and personal hardship, human nature often inclines toward reclaiming lost wealth and seeking revenge. However, upon receiving a warm welcome in Madina, Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ completely transcended these conventional human impulses. He did not stand up to voice frustration, nor did he single out or name those who had wronged him and his followers. Instead, he redirected the focus of his community toward moral ethics, polite speech, and the higher calling of mercy.
Core Principles for an Ethical Society:
In his historic address to the citizens of Madina, Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ outlined foundational principles to guide human conduct and statehood. He urged the believers to love Allah, worship Him exclusively, fulfill their promises, and remain truthful in both speech and action. Crucially, he commanded them never to let their hearts harden like bricks despite past suffering, to foster mutual love, and to eliminate hatred from their hearts.
Transforming Conflict Through Forgiveness:
The Holy Prophet's ﷺ message established that true victory lies not in overpowering one's enemies, but in responding to hostility with goodness. He taught that even when subjected to prolonged oppression, the ultimate retaliation is a smile, a forgiving heart, and an act of mercy. By declaring that goodness should be sent forth until the Day of Judgment, he defined a timeless philosophy for resolving personal and global conflicts.
Conclusion:
Ultimately, the Holy Prophet's ﷺ initial address in Madina stands as a monumental testament to how humanity can overcome the destructive cycle of revenge. By choosing forgiveness over grievance and love over bitterness, he laid down an enduring plan for peaceful coexistence and moral leadership. His timeless guidance reminds us that true strength lies in meeting oppression with mercy and building a community centered on truth, unity, and divine devotion.
