What made Muhammad Tahir-Ul-Qadri an overnight hero?
Pakistan is in the grip of a deep crisis with Pakistan Supreme Court ordering the Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf’s arrest. And then, the Pakistani cleric calling for electoral reforms in the country. Qadri is not alone. He is backed by a mammoth number of supporters.
Qadri has emerged as the face of people’s discontent with poverty, corruption and issues concerning the common man. His support base is only growing with each passing day as people keep their hopes of a change in the country alive.
The whole credit of Ashraf’s ouster, if that happens, will go to Qadri because of the opportune time chosen by him to begin his tirade against the government.
Strong-willed Qadri wants the electoral commission to be reconstituted. He has sent ripples in the establishment and in the opposition circles.
No one could have imagined that Qadri could manage people to follow him and stand by him- a pointer to his show of strength, that too without the backing of any political or religious group.
