ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) leader Dr. Tahirul Qadri on Thursday arrived in Islamabad and filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking reconstitution of Election Commission of Pakistan, SAMAA reported.

In his petition, Qadri stated that despite court orders the government has failed to chalk out a mechanism for implementation of Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution which ensures election of a honest person for any public office.

The moderate scholar, who gathered hundreds of thousands of his supporters in Islamabad to press the PPP-led government for electoral reforms, pleaded to the court to authorize the federal government for Chief Election Commissioner and ECP members.

Qadri alleged that the existing ECP was formed unconstitutionally and declared it as illegal.

He further said that according to Article 213 of the Constitution the names of three nominations from each province should have been suggested but the procedure was not followed.

Qadri also filed a separate petition of speedy hearing of his plea seeking reconstitution of ECP.

Earlier on Wednesday, he announced that his party will take out Inqilab (revolution) March in Multan on February 22 and in Peshawar on February 24.

Yesterday, he addressed a press conference along with Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf leaders Javed Hashmi and Shah Mahmood Qureshi over the reconstitution of ECP—one of four popular demands he presented before the government’s coalition partners at the close of the historic Islamabad sit-in. – SAMAA
