The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the state government to ensure the provision of adequate security during a programme conducted by Pakistani professor Tahir-Ul-Qadri, scheduled to be held on March 15 and 17 in central parts of the city.

Justice V M Kanade and Justice P D Kode warned the state government that the programme should not cause any law and order problems in the city as witnessed in the past.

The court was hearing a petition filed by the Raza Academy — a social and religious group of Muslims — seeking direction to the police to prohibit Qadri from entering Mumbai.

“We apprehend that Qadri is going to give a speech on how India should solve the Kashmir issue. Earlier in 2010, Qadri had, in a speech in Pakistan, said Kashmir was an integral part of Pakistan,” the petitioner’s counsel Vijay Tulpule told the court.

Public prosecutor P A Pol informed the court that the state government was yet to take a decision on the application seeking permission for conducting the gathering. A decision was going to be taken by the state government on Wednesday, he said.

The court said that the government should take serious note of the fear expressed by the Raza Academy as it is also a Muslim forum. The case will be heard further on Thursday.
