Osama Bin Laden is no authority in Islam: Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

Osama Bin Laden is not an authority in Islam; the Taliban model of Islam is their own concocted version of Islam; Islam rejects isolation and promotes integration; Women were elected members of parliament, held senior military, civil and political office in the first Islamic state; Terrorism has no religion: Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri

A conference was held at the Sheriden Suite in Manchester, UK, aimed at clarifying misconceptions that are prevalent about Islam. The conference was attended by Sajjad Karim Member of European Parliament (MEP), former Lord mayor of Manchester Afzal Khan among many other prominent guests.  The key note address was delivered by Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri.

Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri made it clear right from the outset of his three hour lecture that Islam is not what is presented and portrayed by a few extremist groups around the world.  He said he will  present what the true Islam is and then it will be clear to everyone the deep contrast between that and what the extremists portray as Islam.

He said that the Prophet of Islam  emphasised on peace for the whole of humanity.  He made it clear that the Quran advocates a message of human unity and equality irrespective of gender, creed or colour.  He said non-Muslims were given equal rights under an Islamic state and he quoted many traditions from the life of the Prophet of Islam and his companions where non-Muslims were given preferential treatment under the Islamic state. Non Muslims had full religious freedom. Muslims had no right to interfere in their religious affairs.

He said women were given an esteemed position by Islam and that the Quran advocates equality of the genders. He said women were members of parliament during the time of the second caliph of Islam. They were judges and held senior military and high civil office. They also had senior positions in all walks of life.  He said the Taliban model and the way they treat women in particular is nothing to do with Islam, it is their own concocted version of Islam.

He said Osama bin Laden has no authority what so ever in Islam, nor do the Taliban.  He said what ever they say or do should not be taken to be Islam but only as their views and actions alone.  He advised young Muslims not to pay any attention to them and to reject their message.

He said the way of tackling extremism and terrorism is not by aligning terrorism with Islam or with all Muslims, but to get to the root of the cause. He said the root cause is religious conservatism, which breeds extremism which leads to radicalism which in turn gives rise to terrorism.  He said ignoring this and just painting all Muslims as terrorists will have an adverse effect.

He said Islam promotes integration and rejects the models of isolation and annihilation.  The Prophet of Islam chose this model over the other two for the diverse communities belonging to different faiths living together, in the early Islamic state.

Finally he said that no religion whether it be Islam, Christianity or Judaism promotes terrorism. It is individuals  who claim to be followers of these religions who get involved in to terrorism.  He said terrorists are not found exclusively in any one religion or only in religion but they are found in all religions and in non religious, nationalist, ethnic and other groups.  He said these people have no religion. Their conduct which is known as terrorism is in reality criminal behaviour and conduct. Terrorism is sometimes a political phenomenon, with hidden hands supporting it.
