Minhaj-ul-Quran International, the Champion of Islamic Social Values

By: Ali Akbar Alvi (Minhajian)

The chief end of the religion is to help man achieve the highest level of moral and spiritual status so that he may become an exalted figure in the sight of all around him and gain respect and honour among his fellow beings. Allah Almighty wants to see men tied up in a cemented bond of brotherhood. Though He has placed man in different diversities of race, colour, language and culture yet when He addresses them, He does not draw a difference between the people with different cultural, social and economic diversities and backgrounds. But He addresses them saying: “Ya ayyu hannas? (O people). So these cultural diversities have their own role in the social schemes and inspire man to better his understanding and outlook about society and his surroundings

Though Allah Almighty has divided mankind into tribes and nations for greater facility of intercourse, yet neither a tribe nor any member of any tribe enjoys any privilege over the other. The true and genuine source that makes someone worthy in the sight of Allah is the way he leads his life. The Holy Prophet (SAW), in his farewell address, stated, “You all are brothers of one another. None of you enjoys any privilege or superiority over the other.? He further commented neither any Arab does enjoy any privilege over a non-Arab nor any white does enjoy any superiority over a black.? The great benefactor of mankind, Prophet Mohammad (SAW), rooted out all sort of possible existing differences among mankind that may lead to any catastrophic end.

Islam urges its followers on enhancing and establishing brotherhood among them. It states that there are great benefits in universal brotherhood as Allah Almighty has said emphatically that We have created you from one couple and the Holy Prophet Mohammad (SAW) said that all the Muslims are like the limbs of a body. When one part is in trouble; the whole body feels its stress and strains. We can increase that level of relationship bringing our wills, interests, pursuits, desires, likes and dislikes in perfect coordination of the demands Allah Almighty expects from His creatures.

Minhaj-ul-Quran International, a well-balanced and moderate religious movement, is trying its level best to revive the social values in Islam. Patron-in-chief, Shaikh-ul-Islam Dr Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri has laid great stress on his followers and devotees to extend their potential to cement the basic unit of society i.e. family. In his many speeches, he advocated the rights of both the husband and wive, which they enjoy on one another. He urges the members of Minhaj-ul-Quran International specially and the Muslims around the globe in general to be good towards each other. He gave many references from the life of the Holy Prophet (SAW) to stress the importance of these values.

The Holy Prophet (SAW) said, “The best among you is he who treats the members of his family best.? Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri also urged the youths on being good to their parents. He wrote a book entitled “The Rights of Parents? and he also wants the parents to be good to their offspring and provide them the best possible needs that may help them to tread well on future paths.

Shaikh-ul-Islam inspired Minhaj Welfare Society to manage the finance for many couples every year and give an opportunity to the youth who are not born with silver spoon in their mouths to start their voyage of a married life. This year 23 couples were tied into the marriage bond and were given dowries and all necessities of life.

As Islam looks down upon divorce and declares it the most hated, yet permissible, act in the sight of Allah. So Minhaj-ul-Quran tries its utmost to dissolve the exiting issues between husbands and wives and urges them to be good to their better halves and lead a decent life.

Minhaj-ul-Quran International wants its members to give special heed to the upbringing of she-babies, as the Holy Prophet (SAW) said that: “A person who is blessed with a daughter or daughters and makes no discrimination between them and his sons and brings them up with kindness and affection will be as close to Paradise as my index and middle fingers are to each other.? Minhaj-ul-Quran College for women has been established where the girls are inspired to be good future mothers. It has been observed that the students who completed their education from the college and stepped into the arena of life proved good daughters, daughters-in-law and more than that good wives.

An important feature of Minhaj-ul-Quran International is its training plan. The members of Minhaj-ul-Quran are expected to spare time and contact their neighbours and listen to their problems and make sincere efforts to bring them out of their problems. Minhaj-ul-Quran International inspires the members to take care of their neighours, only to seek Allah’s pleasure and His beloved’s. In this connection the Holy Prophet (SAW) said: What you like and select for yourself like and select the same for your neighbours. Perhaps the most comprehensive directive within the domain of social values is: “Help one another in righteousness and virtue but help not one another in transgression.? When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said on one occasion, “Help your brother whether oppressor or oppressed?, he was asked, “We understand what you mean by going to the help of a brother who is oppressed, but how shall we help a brother who is an oppressor?? The Prophet (PBUH) replied, “By restraining him from oppressing others.?

Minhaj-ul-Quran International is taking special measures to upbring and train the orphans. It has established a shelter house named “Agoush? for the orphan victims of Kashmir earthquake. I asked one of the children there, how do feel at Aghoush? He replied: I feel at home and the facilities are great. The poor children say that the administration ensures their education and training and manages their proper upbringing.

Minhaj-ul-Quran International is the only movement that advocates peace and harmony among all sections of society. They appreciate the diversity of all kinds in a healthy society. One wonders to find Sunni, Deobanddi and Shias at Minhaj-ul-Quran International. Allama Ali Ghazanfar Qararvi, a very veteran Shia Scholar, prayed in public that his dead body for his funeral prayer come out of Minhaj-ul-Quran. I visted the College of Sharia and asked a guy Shahdat Husain – a Shia – working as clerk asked how he feels working at Minhaj-ul-Quran. He said that he does not face any sectarian feelings at Minhaj and he considers himself fortunate to be where he is. Minhaj-ul-Quran International condemns all sorts of racial, social, religious, sectarian and economic prejudices.

Minhaj-ul-Quran International teaches good manners in the light of the Holy Quran and the life of Prophet Mohammad (SAW). In Surah 31, verse no 18 Allah says: “Turn not your face away from people in pride, nor walk in the earth haughtily; surely Allah loves not any arrogant boaster. Moderate your pace when walking and soften your voice when speaking.? The movement urges its members to extend goodness and to seek to restrain them from evil, with kindness and affection. Spying, backbiting and undue suspicion must be avoided. It is a duty of every Muslim constantly to seek increase of knowledge. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) went so far as to add, “A word of wisdom is the lost property of a Muslim. He should seize it wherever he finds it.?

In short, Minhaj-ul-Quran International is promoting social values and ensuring strong and lasting relationship and interaction of people based on equality, doing what is right, and give consideration to the rights and privileges of others. It is the agenda that fancies and attracts the people from all spheres of life to join it to become a member of a larger family. Minhaj-ul-Quran International believes that the only way to enhance peace and prosperity around the globe is to promote the social, moral and spiritual values propagated by Islam, the essence of which was observed during the rise and expansion in the early history of Islam. It is applicable to the present and future for all mankind.
