The decline of language and literature is a major cultural tragedy of our time: Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri

The deterioration of language and literature is eroding human relationships and widely accepted values and traditions

The founding leader and patron-in-chief of Minhaj-ul-Quran International, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, has said that the decline of language and literature has become one of the most serious cultural tragedies of the modern age. He observed that the kind of language now spoken and used in the media is something that was neither heard nor read in the past.

He stated that the degradation of language and literature is undermining respect in human relationships and eroding established moral values and traditions. He further noted that even from religious platforms—such as the pulpit—language is sometimes used in a manner that compromises the sanctity and ethical dignity of Islamic teachings, and negatively influences the character of the younger generation.

He remarked that words which once caused people to feel deeply ashamed are now used casually and are even considered a sign of informality. Blind imitation of Western culture, he said, has inflicted irreparable damage on Eastern values, traditions, and the standards of speech and writing.

Shaykh-ul-Islam added that he has presented a comprehensive discourse on this subject, which will be published in the May issue of the monthly magazine Minhaj-ul-Quran.
