Hadith (Saying of the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon Him)

The Companions asked the Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon Him)

“Oh Messenger of Allah, what is Qurbani?”

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) said,

“This is the Sunnah (Custom) of your father (Prophet) Ibrahim (Peace and Blessings be upon Him).”

The Companions then asked, “Oh Messenger of Allah, what reward will we get in this?”

The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) replied, “A virtue for every hair (on the animal)”

(Hadith reported in Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ibn Majah)

What is Qurbani?

Eid-ul-Adha is a very important time of the year for Muslims around the world as they prepare for the Hajj and are reminded of the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Ismail (Peace and Blessings be upon them). Qurbani or udhiya – اضحیۃ in Arabic refers to Muslims sacrificing an animal (usually a sheep, goat or a cow) on the day of Eid reviving a 1400 years Islamic tradition. The sacrificial meat is divided amongst the poor and needy in submission to Allah (SWTA).

According to Islamic law it is Wajib (necessary) for a mature Muslim (male or female) who has the financial means and is not living below the threshold of poverty to give Qurbani. Qurbani is not Wajib for children.

Which type of Animal should be sacrificed?

Due to Qurbani (udhiya) and its importance with the Islamic faith, Minhaj Welfare Foundation and its experienced team ensure that the animal purchased is in accordance to guidelines set by Islamic law. We affirm to our donors that the animal purchased is in the right shape, size and free from any defect.

There are mainly two types of animals that Qurbani is done:

  1. Small Animal: A goat, sheep or is considered to be One full Qurbani or Udihya for One person.
  2. Large Animal: A cow, buffalo or camel is divided into 7 shares; each share is considered as One Qurbani for One person. The Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) would also sacrifice an animal on behalf of the Ummah as well.
