The politicians of Pakistan are incapable of saying anything without indulging in coloured phrases of rhetorical exaggeration. The pathetic grandiloquence of their speeches is invariably laced with barbs against their rivals, and the discerning listener is left with the impression that each one of them fancies himself as a Christ among the Pharisees. Opponents are projected as self-seeking ravenous parasites whose motives are summed up in the Biblical reprimand: “Woe unto you Pharisees, for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets!” Yet they all dwell in glass houses and cannot afford to throw stones.
As the Islamabad administration has placed containers and other barriers to stop the long march of Tahir-ul-Qadri, chief of Tehrik Minhaj-ul-Quran, from entering the capital, the city district government of Rawalpindi on its part on Saturday removed all kind of party banners and pamphlets of TMQ pasted on walls from all parts of the city.

The bold pronouncement thrust Qadri into headlines worldwide and led to an invitation to speak at the prestigious World Economic Forum and United States Institute for Peace. Two years on, the religious cleric has resurfaced in Pakistan, demanding free and fair elections, after spending the last six years living in Canada. Qadri has come a long way since his time as a parliamentarian during General Pervez Musharraf's regime in the early 2000s.

He earned praise in the West when he came out with a 600-page fatwa in 2010 condemning terrorism, using the same language in the Quran and Islam that militants often use to justify their actions. He’s spoken at such institutions as Georgetown University and the United States Institute for Peace, and held rallies in Britain against extremism.
The obfuscated environment in the country has led to sheer despondency amongst people. The responsibility for this pathetic and precarious situation rests squarely with the so-called democratic dispensation, which has remained overly busy in plundering every asset of this country and turned a deaf ear to public grousing throughout its five years of independent, uninterrupted and unprecedented rule.
