The fatwa against Islamic terrorists issued by a London-based Muslim organisation on Tuesday has been hailed as a significant step forward in the fight against fundamentalism, and one that will have repercussions in the UK and beyond.
A Fatwa or religious edict has been served on the world-wide Muslim community by Muhammad Tahir ul Qadri, an Islamic scholar, professor, lawyer and leader in the religious community. The intent is to distribute correct information to youth stating that terrorism is forbidden in their holy book.
This may be the fatwa the world has been waiting for. It was delivered, not in a mosque or a madrasah, nor in some dark corner of cyberspace, but in a wood-paneled hall opposite St. James' Park in London last week.
The founder of the Minhaj-ul-Quran International, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri has expressed his deep condolence and grief upon the sad news of the death of Shaykh al Azhar Ash-Shaykh Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi. Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri sent his condolences to Jamia Al-Azhar, to the Egyptian Government and its people and to other religious scholars.
Qadri said the Al-Qaeda has not been sufficiently challenged and that his global ruling against terrorism completely dismantles the banned terror organisation's violent ideology. In his 600-page ruling, Qadri said Islam forbids the massacre of innocent citizens and suicide bombings.
An Islamic scholar and theologian Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri tells CNN's Christiane Amanpour about his 600-page fatwa against terrorism, or opinion, against jihad.
An influential Pakistani cleric issued a 600-page fatwa on March 2, described as an "absolute" condemnation of terrorism without "any excuses or pretexts." Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri declared that terrorists and suicide bombers were unbelievers and that "terrorism is terrorism, violence is violence and it has no place in Islamic teaching and no justification can be provided for it, or any kind of excuses or ifs or buts."
Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri has issued a 600 page fatwa, written in Urdu, which he hopes to have translated and published in English. The fatwa is entitled: FATWA ON SUICIDE BOMBINGS AND TERRORISM. I have linked the title to an 88 page English summary in pdf format. It is likely that when published in English, the fatwa will appear on or near this minhaj books page.
He’s a man on a mission – a mission to state the obvious. But for Dr Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri it is the obvious facts that need stating loudest. Last week the Pakistani-born cleric took to a stage in London to declare his Islamic religious ruling, or fatwa, against terrorism.
A torturous spate of terrorism that continues unabated for last many years has brought Muslim Umma in general and Pakistan in particular into disrepute. There is no gainsaying the fact that the Muslims on the whole oppose and condemn terrorism in unequivocal terms and are not ready to accept it even as remotely related to Islam in any manner.
There has never been a shortage of fatwas. These legal rulings or opinions made by religious authorities address a wide array of issues concerning politics and social norms, and have both justified and widely condemned the use of violence. In 1998, Al Qaeda ideologues Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri issued a fatwa “to kill the Americans and their allies.”
Sahibzada Hussain Mohi-ud-Din Qadri spoke on the topic of the Holy Prophet’s (blessings & peace be upon him) “Attribute of Gnosis”. He said that everything in the world owed itself to the gnosis of the Holy Prophet (blessings & peace be upon him). That is why the blessed soul of the Holy Prophet (blessings & peace be upon him) is present in every age. Referring to a tradition, he said that when one gets back home, one should say “Assalam-o-Alakium” in accordance with the saying of the Holy Prophet (blessings & peace be upon him).
